Manila, Philippines — The year 2024 was one of the most challenging in recent memory for the Philippines in terms of natural calamities. A series of powerful typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic activity affected millions, placing significant strain on local communities and disaster response systems.

🌀 Typhoons Dominate the Season

The country experienced five major typhoons during the latter half of the year, including Typhoon Rosario, which brought torrential rains and displaced over 300,000 people across Luzon and Visayas. Agricultural losses from storms were estimated at over ₱12 billion.

🌋 Mount Mayon and Taal Volcano Activity

Mount Mayon erupted twice in 2024, prompting large-scale evacuations in Albay Province. Taal Volcano also recorded heightened seismic activity in August, leading to suspension of classes and temporary closures of local businesses.

🛡️ Government Response and Recovery

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) coordinated relief efforts, distributing over ₱5 billion worth of aid and mobilizing military units for rescue operations. Calls for stronger climate adaptation measures and resilient infrastructure gained momentum among lawmakers and NGOs.

As climate threats continue to intensify, experts urge proactive planning, community-based preparedness programs, and investment in sustainable infrastructure across the Philippines.
